Sudan: new oil output can help finance conflict

(Reuters) - Sudan said on Tuesday the cost of a full-blown conflict with South Sudan would not deter it from recapturing the disputed Heglig oilfield, and that newly tapped oilfields would help to sustain its struggling economy.

South Sudan took control of the contested oil-producing Heglig region last week, prompting Sudan's parliament to brand its former civil war foe an "enemy" on Monday and to call for a swift recapture of the area of flat savanna.

Both countries' faltering economies will likely be important factors in the conflict's outcome.

"Despite the high cost of the war, despite the destruction that the war can cause ... our options are very limited. We can tolerate some sacrifice, until we can liberate our land," Sudan's ambassador to Kenya, Kamal Ismail Saeed, said.

"So from our side, yes, it is expensive but that doesn't deter us or that doesn't stop us from exerting all effort to liberate our land," he told reporters in Nairobi.

"We have been in war without oil for several years and we survived ... As a matter of fact ... the good news (is) we have developed other sources and fields of oil and that will really compensate our loss."

Fighting over oil payments and territory has withered the combined crude output of both countries.

The Heglig field is vital to Sudan's economy because it accounted for half the 115,000 barrels per day output that remained in its control when South Sudan seceded in July. The field's output has stopped due to the fighting, officials say.

The landlocked South had already closed its 350,000 bpd output after failing to agree how much it should pay to export via Sudan's pipelines, a Red Sea port and other facilities.

The latest clashes have also dampened hopes that Sudan and South Sudan can reach a deal soon on disputed issues such as demarcation of their 1,800-km (1,200-mile) border, division of debt and the status of citizens in each other's territory.

The loss of Heglig, a shock to many Sudanese, has also stirred tensions in the north. Sudan's interior minister said on Tuesday the police college had dismissed its South Sudanese students after "their violation of police regulations and their celebration of the occupation of Heglig".

South Sudan's military (SPLA) spokesman said its positions were bombed on Monday, but no clashes were reported on Tuesday.

"We are aware they are trying to advance, and the SPLA is ready to receive them," spokesman Philip Aguer said, describing the conflict as a "limited war". Sudan's army spokesman was not immediately available to comment.

NEW OILFIELDS

Saeed insisted Khartoum could weather the latest conflict, which has sent food prices soaring and hit the currency as officials try to make up for the sudden loss in revenues.

He said production from new fields in the west of the Kordofan region, in Darfur and in the states of White Nile and Blue Nile would offset much of the loss of Heglig's output.

"We used to produce 115,000 barrels a day before the attack, we lost about 40,000, and now we'll get another 30,000."

South Sudan insists Heglig is rightfully part of the South and says it will not withdraw its troops unless the United Nations deploys a neutral force to monitor a ceasefire. Saeed said that was unacceptable.

"They have two options: either to withdraw very quickly or withdraw. We will reserve the right to use all means at our access to kick them out of there, and we will do it," he said.

"They will be thrown out of there very soon."

Meanwhile U.N. Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon expressed alarm over reports of a buildup of militia forces in the disputed Abyei border region.

The U.N. statement did not say where the reports were from or give details but called it a violation of a June agreement in which both sides said they would withdraw forces from the area.

Ban called on Khartoum to "ensure the full and immediate withdrawal of these elements from the area".

Abyei, which is prized for its fertile grazing land and produces some oil, was a major battleground during Sudan's civil war and is symbolically potent for both sides. Both countries lay claim to it.

Khartoum seized Abyei in May last year after a southern attack on an army convoy, triggering an exodus of tens of thousands of civilians. The Security Council authorized the deployment of 3,800 U.N. peacekeepers in Abyei in June.

Some 2 million people died in Sudan's civil war, waged for all but a few years between 1955 and 2005 over conflicts of ideology, ethnicity, oil and religion.

10 Ways to Teach Young Kids to Write Computer Programs ? Nanny ...

Posted on by admin | in Nanny

The exponential growth of computer technology has brought us from computers that took up entire rooms to hand-held devices that are even faster and more efficient then their bulky counterparts, and all in a very short period of time. Parents and teachers alike know that the next generation will need to have advanced technological skills to compete in the workplace, and the basics should be learned at an early age. Young minds are fertile ground for planting the seeds of computer programming skills. By the ages of 11 to 13, kids are gaining the analytical skills they need to solve complex problems. If you want your children to learn the basics, here are 10 ways to teach young kids to write computer programs.

  1. Games ? There are several fun games that teach kids how to write programs without them even realizing it. Magic Pen, Auditorium and Fantastic Contraption are problem solving games that kids enjoy playing while simultaneously learning. Other games like Light Bot and Mindrover teach basic programming skills.
  2. Logo ? A computer language designed for kids, Logo is easy enough for even 7 year olds to learn. Children give commands to make the turtle on the screen do whatever they want. There are free downloads and tutorials to help them learn basic programming.
  3. Legos ? Kids love playing with Legos from an early age and as they get older Lego Mindstorms teaches them how to build robots. This robotics kit has them using their imaginations to build some interesting stuff. The simple graphical language helps young kids to use meaningful programs and see the results in their own creations.
  4. Phrogram ? Formerly known as Kids Programming Language or KPL, Phrogram comes with a lot of sample programs that can do things that range from simple to complex. Children can use this to make fun games, design digital art, or build math and learning skills.
  5. Scratch ? A fun way for kids to learn about computer programming is to have them create their own online games. Scratch is a language for kids developed at MIT that teaches them to write computer programs, see how they operate, and have fun doing it.
  6. Alice ? This animated program was developed to encourage more girls to get excited about computer programming, but boys love Alice too. By using drop-down menus, there?s no need to learn code while learning the basic concepts of writing programs.
  7. Visual Basic Express ? Older kids who want to advance their programming skills can use Visual Basic Express to learn how to use code. It helps to already know programming languages, but isn?t completely necessary. Children aged 10 and up will learn to key in data and then do something with the data they entered.
  8. Python ? Another cool tool for kids to learn how to program computer games is Python. This free online book uses a powerful high-level programming language for youngsters who have already mastered the basics.
  9. Codeacademy ? An interactive and fun way for kids to learn computer code is to use Codeacademy.com. This online tool helps kids to create websites, games and apps while competing and learning with their friends.
  10. Java ? To really master their computer programming skills advanced students should use Stanford?s free online Java class. Kids will need to learn Java if they ever plan to take the AP Computer Science Exam. They may need a little help at first, but will soon become so engaged that they will be completing assignments on their own.

Most people know how to use the computer technology that?s already been developed, but few know how it really works. By teaching kids at an early age, they can gain the knowledge and skills they need to write their own programs and have fun doing it. By the time they reach adulthood, they will be ready to advance that know-how to compete in the technology based world we live in. Maybe your child will become the next Bill Gates or Mark Zuckerberg. Who knows?

Sony Japan blends the Torne PS3 TV tuner with 500GB of NAS, calls it Nasne

Image

While the PS3's media abilities in the US are limited to what it can access via discs or over the network, in Europe / Australia (PlayTV) and Japan (Torne) TV tuners stretch things further. Now, Sony Japan has followed those up with the Nasne headless media box shown above. A combination networked recorder and media storage device with a 500GB SATA HDD and tuners for both antenna and satellite TV built-in, it pulls in broadcasts and either records it or streams to up to two other Sony products (Vita, PS3 with Torne app, Vaio PC, Sony Tablet or Xperia phone) on the same home network at once. It will also support streaming of stored media via DLNA, once its software is updated to version 1.5. The capabilities of the Nasne vary depending on the hardware it's used with: PS3 users can connect up to four of the devices to one console, however it can also export video files formatted for offline viewing on the Vita or transfer recorded files to PCs for Blu-ray archival.

Is this a promising example of the "One Sony" synergy Kaz so recently promised? We'll have to wait until the Nasne ships July 19th for 16,980 yen ($211) to find out for sure. Sadly, like the Torne (which will receive its own 4.0 software update this summer) and Blu-ray recorders that came before it's unlikely we'll ever this one in the US, but that won't stop us from dreaming. A press release with full specs follows after the break, check out Engadget Japan for a few more pictures.

A Man's Perspective?? ?Could Seal and Heidi Have Saved Their ...

?

By Dr. Bobby Love

By Dr. Love

It occurs far too often. Couples enter a relationship with the best intentions and then something happens. Heidi Klum and Seal, who were married in 2005 and have four children, announced that they had separated in January 2012. Unfortunately, they have given up on their marriage and now divorce is in their future. What happened to the famous couple who were once madly in love? Could they have saved their relationship? During an interview on the Ellen Show, Seal confided that he and Heidi simply grew apart. Ellen did not probe any further, but I think we need to ask ourselves why.

Why is this question so important? If it can happen to a couple ?in love?, could it happen to you and your sweetheart, or a family member or a close friend? Are you struggling to stay afloat in a sinking relationship or maybe you have moved on to your second or third marriage? Perhaps you have decided to fly solo, due to the fear of relationship failure. Awareness is the first step in prevention and we need to discover why couples, who were once in love, grow apart.

Research indicates that ?growing apart? is the root cause of most relationship breakdowns. The symptoms might include irreconcilable differences or infidelity, but the cause needs to be traced back to the fork in the relationship. Couples start out together on the right path to love and then some reach a fatal fork where separations occur. Seal literally swept Heidi off her feet. His marriage proposal was one of the most romantic moments in Whistler, BC. He rented a helicopter and they flew to the top of a secluded mountain for a romantic picnic in the wilderness. As Heidi was drinking in the breathtaking view, Seal got down on one knee and he proposed to her.

Seal?s romantic gesture raised the bar to dizzying heights, for other men to climb. I shamefully admit that I proposed to my wife after a late night party. In my defense, I was a na?ve twenty-four year old guy learning some valuable lessons about love and romance. Fortunately my loving wife said, ?Yes? and our marriage has survived and blossomed for over twenty-three years. Although we experienced some challenging times, we have learned that couples that grow together, stay together. Unfortunately, Heidi and Seal discovered that couples that grow apart, fall apart.

Could they have saved their relationship? We will probably never know the true answer, especially since their separation has now deteriorated to divorce proceedings. We can learn from failed relationships and we can adopt preventative measures for saving and improving our own relationships. We also need to set a better example for our children, who are the witnesses to the health of our relationships. There are too many young people today, who are questioning the sanctity of marriage and the value of relationships. I am sure that Seal and Heidi?s children are experiencing the pain, confusion, and sense of loss related to their parent?s failed marriage. My intention is to offer some hope and practical advice for saving and improving relationships from a man?s perspective:

? Relationships teach us about unconditional love and we need to know when we are the student or the teacher.

? Relationships are partnerships and we must work together for the success of the partnership.

? Maintaining a balanced lifestyle is imperative for making time for our relationships.

? Regular relationship tune-ups will help our relationships run smoother.

? Open and honest communication builds intimacy and intimacy inspires romance.

? Love, laughter, and playfulness are essential ingredients for having fun in our relationships.

? Celebrating our relationships will inspire harmony and happiness.

? Growing together is the secret to building a fulfilling and a long lasting, loving relationship.

? If we reach a fork in our relationship, we must remember that we have two choices: we can diverge on a path to separation or we can converge back to the path of love that we started on together. It is too bad that Seal and Heidi did not converge back to the romantic moment in the mountains.
