Weight Control Can Cut Women's Diabetes Risk, Study Shows

FRIDAY, July 27 (HealthDay News) -- Weight control through diet and exercise can prevent most cases of type 2 diabetes in American women over age 50, a new study finds.

Researchers from the University of Massachusetts Medical School in Worcester, Mass., analyzed data from more than 150,000 postmenopausal women who were followed for more than 10 years. Hispanics and Asians were about twice as likely as whites to develop diabetes; blacks were two to three times as likely.

Those differences were largely due to modifiable lifestyle factors such as diet, physical activity and smoking, the researchers said.

The study also found that a large reduction in diabetes risk among women would occur in all four racial and ethnic groups if they maintained a healthy body weight, ate a healthy diet and were physically active.

Maintaining a body-mass index (BMI) of less than 25 appeared to be particularly important in reducing diabetes risk. BMI is a measure of body fat based on height and weight.

"Our work shows that among numerous races [and] ethnicities, the women with both high body-mass index and low levels of physical activity are far more likely to develop diabetes," primary investigator Dr. Yunsheng Ma said in a medical school news release. "A healthier diet and adequate levels of physical activity significantly lower that risk for most women."

The study was published July 23 in the journal Diabetes Care.

Type 2 diabetes, the more common type, means the body doesn't produce or properly use the hormone insulin, which is needed to convert food into energy. Untreated, type 2 diabetes can cause damage to the heart, eyes, kidneys and other organs.

Conference the Latest Sign of Increased Anti-Immigrant Activity in ...

The conference is the latest example of an increase in activity by the anti-immigrant players in North Carolina. In 2011, the NC House created the House Select Committee on the State?s Role in Immigration Policy. The Committee has had numerous hearings throughout 2012 and has provided a platform for anti-immigrant and immigrant rights activists to voice their opinions. On June 13, 2012, for example, anti-immigrant leaders including William Gheen, James Johnson and Ron Woodard met with Speaker of the House Thom Tillis (R-District 98) to discuss immigration issues. It is unclear at this time what the attendance of the conference will be but anti-immigrant groups in North Carolina have been encouraging people to go to the event for a number of weeks.

Scheduled speakers at the August event include:

In October 2011, Page participated in a panel titled, ?Crime Challenges from Illegal Immigration? which was sponsored and moderated by the anti-immigrant group Center for Immigration Studies (CIS).?

Ilario Pantano ? A former candidate for the U.S. House of Representatives in 2010 and 2012, Pantano has promoted anti-Muslim sentiment. Pantano spoke at both the 2010 and 2011 9/11 rallies in New York City put on by anti-Muslim activist Pamela Geller. He has also written the following about the Islamic center close to ground zero: ?It is about marking religious, ideological and territorial conquest.? He continued by stating, ?This mosque is a martyr-marker honoring the terrorists who less than a decade ago killed thousands of us just two blocks away, and it must be stopped.?

Sue Myrick ? retiring NC Congresswoman (R-District 9) who also has a history of anti-Muslim sentiment ? she has spoken at the national conference of ACT! for America, one of the largest anti-Muslim groups in the country. When it comes to safety and security, no other inflation hedge investment instrument compares to owning real physical gold or silver.

History suggests that the prices of gold and silver have generally accurately reflected broader changes in prices that contribute to inflation rate measures. They have also consistently protected investors? wealth against poor economic conditions and have provided a safe haven in times of financial turmoil.

In addition, unlike the potentially empty promises backing inflation-protected paper notes, gold and silver coins are tangible items of real intrinsic value that can easily be held in your hand.

Indian upheaval bares Colombia's nagging conflict

TORIBIO, Colombia (AP) ? One of the stiffest blows in years to the prestige of Colombia's military wasn't inflicted by its leftist rebel foes and didn't claim a single soldier's life.

It was dealt by a relatively diminutive people called the Nasa who marched furiously up to the top of a 7,500-foot (2,300-meter) peak last week and forcibly dislodged a clutch of soldiers from a strategic outpost.

These verdant, craggy mountains are the Nasa's ancestral lands and the Indians say they are fed up with violent usurpers. They are demanding that the country's military and its rebel foes leave their enclave in the southwestern state of Cauca.

Yet neither side in Colombia's half-century old conflict is heeding the Nasas' wishes to leave them in peace. Their homeland lies on a key corridor that rebels and their chief funding source, cocaine, regularly transit on their way to the Pacific coast.

The government alleges that some of the 115,000 Nasa are allied with rebels of the leftist Revolutionary Armed Forces of Colombia, or FARC, which authorities say purchases the high-quality marijuana that many Indians grow.

The Indians' widely broadcast standoff with government troops has made this past week perhaps the most difficult of Juan Manuel Santos' two-year-old presidency, bringing Colombia's conflict into people's living rooms as it rarely has been in recent years and highlighting his government's inability to control large parts of the countryside. Santos even suffered the indignity of being jeered by the Nasa when he visited Toribio the previous week to announce investments in social programs.

Colombia's conflict plays out far from its sparkling cities. Its victims are its most marginalized.

"We sometimes get the impression that there's hardly any conflict at all, that it is very distant," said Jordi Raich, the International Committee of the Red Cross' country director. "But Colombia's armed conflict continues, and while it may be happening in remote areas, the humanitarian consequences are not lessened."

"Peace is distant," he added.

The conflict claims hundreds if not thousands of lives a year, mostly civilians killed in a dirty war involving right-wing death squads, rebels and the military. Yet in terms of violence, this month's upheaval in Cauca has been comparatively tame. Its damage is, instead, political.

It was clear to everyone during Santos' visit that the government had no control of the area. A FARC commander held court with reporters at a roadblock less than 3 miles (5 kilometers) away.

"This is a political defeat for the Santos government," said Jorge Restrepo, an analyst at Colombia's CERAC think tank. "It puts in question his ability to win re-election."

Santos, a 60-year-old scion of a Bogota newspaper clan, won the presidency on the coattails of Alvaro Uribe, for whom he was defense minister from 2006-2009, a time of impressive military gains against the FARC.

Santos has not said whether he will seek re-election in 2014, but his popularity has plummeted as rebel violence mounts.

The insurgents have in recent months reverted to traditional hit-and-run tactics, and stepped up attacks on infrastructure including oil facilities. On Friday, they blew up a bridge in Caqueta state in southern Colombia that was vital to oil companies.

The trigger for the Toribio upheaval came before dawn on July 6 when rebels rained crude mortars and grenades on its town center, aiming for the sandbag-shrouded police station. Such munitions rarely hit their mark, and instead tore big chunks out of the brightly colored brick homes surrounding it. Three days later, when the bombardment ended, six people were wounded and about 100 left homeless, said Toribio's mayor, Ezequiel Vitonas.

Four people were wounded in a separate grenade attack on July 8 on a Toribio medical clinic. The next day, angry Indians tried to dismantle the sandbag wall protecting the police station.

"We can't take it anymore," said the governor of the local Nasa reserve, Marcos Yule, counting about 1,000 such attacks in the past few years. The worst had come on July 9, 2011, he said, when the FARC exploded a bus bomb a block from Toribio's central plaza, killing three people.

Santos came to town two days after that anniversary, and later accused some "elements" of the Nasa of being in cahoots with the rebels, a charge that Nasa leaders deny.

Colombia's counter-narcotics police director, Gen. Luis Perez, says the FARC would be pleased to have the military out of the area to lessen the chances of having their harvested marijuana seized.

Perez estimates at least 250 acres (100 hectares) of marijuana plants grow in the Cauca. What is grown on the Nasa indigenous reserve is legally protected from destruction. At night, the hills around Toribio are pitted with lights used by cultivators to accelerate the plants' growth and potency.

As those lights went off at dawn Wednesday, hundreds of Nasa headed for the strategic hilltop, where a small group of soldiers was encamped, charged with protecting communications antennas and keeping an eye on mountain trails regularly used by the FARC.

Among the Indians were "guardians," men and women who carry staffs hewed from palm trees and decorated with brightly colored ribbons. The staffs, says Yule, are instruments of authority only and cannot be used as weapons.

In the ensuing pandemonium, several dozen Indians encircled six soldiers and forced them off the hilltop. One soldier fired a burst of shots into the air, sending reporters scurrying. But only egos were hurt.

The images, meanwhile, were published around the world.

The mayhem was strangely isolated. While those involved in the struggle kicked up dust, hundreds more Nasa peacefully rested on the grass as other solders gathered their belongings and sheepishly retreated downhill.

The next day, however, the soldiers, accompanied by riot police, were back. Firing tear gas and buckshot, they retook the hilltop. Eight Nasa were injured, none critically, said Luis Angel Penna, Toribio's assistant hospital director.

And the violence wasn't over.

Two local men were killed by gunfire over the next two days in the neighboring towns, one during a demonstration by farmers trying to eject soldiers from their village, another shot for allegedly failing to heed an order to halt at a military roadblock.

The tensions and mistrust are not new.

In May, 39-year-old coffee picker Julio Dagua was killed near Toribio by rebels who had falsely accused him of being an army informant, said his brother Edgar.

"He had been threatened for a long time," he added.

Edgar Dagua said residents won't be intimidated by either side in the conflict. "They're going to have to kill all of us."

Some of Toribio's residents earlier this month joined the more than 2 million Colombians who have been internally displaced by the country's conflict. They are living temporarily in a shelter in the nearby town of Santander de Quilichao.

One is Maria Alejandra Munoz, a garrulous, 38-year-old mother of three who earns her living washing other people's laundry by hand. "You get tired of this conflict."

Her brother, Ruben, said that "what people want most is peace for our town."

But how?

"That's difficult," said Maria Alejandra, leaning against a support in the cramped shelter. "If someone had a formula for it, they'd give it to the presidents."

From computers and high-speed Internet to off-the-shelf software and customized programs, technology is often a pricey prerequisite for getting a new business up and running.

?You don?t have to get the latest and greatest, but you don?t want to buy the cheapest products either,? says Ramon Ray, editor of tech website Smallbiztechnology.com.

Choosing the right kind of hardware and software can be tough, especially if you?re limited to a shoestring budget. Entrepreneurs typically must consider how tech-savvy they are, whether different products and brands can interact with one another and what the future of the company might demand, among other factors.

?You want to make sure the technology you buy will grow with you,? says Mr. Ray. For example, while you might not need a lot of memory on your computer in the beginning, having a significant amount of storage space may become critical down the road.

Heather Haddad learned this the hard way. After finishing graduate school in 2007, she launched Fum[eacute]e Cigars, a bricks-and-mortar and online retail business in Cedar Park, Texas. Though saddled with $200,000 in student loans, Ms. Haddad funded the venture by taking on even more debt, in the form of a $50,000 bank loan, $10,000 in credit-card charges and by borrowing from family.

One of Ms. Haddad?s first technology investments was an inventory-management system that cost her $300. She expected it to automatically remove items from her website as soon as they sold in her storefront ? an important task because she couldn?t afford to load up on inventory and wanted to avoid misleading customers about what she had available.

But Ms. Haddad soon discovered that the system couldn?t update information in real time, causing delays. What?s more, it stopped working when she upgraded the program her company website runs on, and the two items must be compatible. To resolve the problem, she found she would either have to spend another $300 on a different version of the inventory system ? or go back to using the older website program.

Ms. Haddad chose the latter to save money, and says, in hindsight, she should?ve put more effort into researching her options upfront.

By contrast, Krista L. Sherkey, owner of Streamline6 Communications, a public-relations and marketing agency in Honolulu, says a portable receipt scanner and related software she purchased upon starting her venture is meeting her needs and even helping her save. Whenever Ms. Sherkey incurs a business expense, she uses the scanner to make a digital copy of the receipt. A corresponding program then transfers the data from the receipt into a PDF file on her desktop that she can label.

The scanner and software, called NeatReceipts and NeatWorks, respectively, also can be used for copying and storing data from business cards, insurance forms, legal documents and more. Ms. Sherkey, 30, says she became her own boss in 2009 because she needed a job that she could perform from any location since her husband?s career requires the couple to frequently relocate. ?I was doing it three or four times a week,? she says. ?Now I?m doing it three or four times a month.?

Reading product reviews, participating in tutorials and requesting referrals to other entrepreneurs who have used a particular technology are ways to find out if it?s likely to pay off.

Ms. Wilder, the graphic designer, says she took some of these steps before tapping her savings to buy a laptop computer costing $1,600 and a comprehensive design program for $2,700. She also says having to pay for these items herself prompted her to try to get the most out of what she bought for her start-up, which she named Design Solutions LI.

?It made me want to work a little harder to get those clients,? says Ms. Wilder, who admits at least one other piece of technology she bought early on ? a $100 software program for organizing her schedule ? proved unnecessary.

?If I could do things over,? she says, ?I would spend that $100 on something much more practical.?

Looking for a reason to keep your Apple smartphone in good shape with iPhone repair? Check out the new DIY skin cancer app that has been designed to diagnose users via 23 nude photos of themselves. While it may sound strange, The Atlantic said the University of Michigan app allows people to take the pictures as comparison.

"UMSkinCheck establishes a degree of clinical objectivity in the self-exam," the news source said. "Aside from establishing your skin's baseline, this new, free app includes a risk-assessment survey, periodic reminders to check your body for any signs of cancer, and examples of cancerous lesions so that you know what you're looking for."

The developers say the app is a cost-effective alternative, but it requires some time and patience to set up, as someone will need a partner to help take 23 different poses of nude photographs in order for the program to work as it should.

CNET said even with this app, people should still visit doctors to get baseline testing, but this can help keep track of any ongoing skin conditions.
