PetStore.com Blog: PetStore.com Partners with Cell Phones for ...

Online pet supply store PetStore.com and non-profit Cell Phones for Soldiers Inc. are asking pet owners to help troops call home by donating gently-used cellular phones. Although the military landscape is ever changing, as many as 290,000 troops are serving in the U.S. military overseas around the world. By donating to Cell Phones for Soldiers, pet owners can provide troops with that precious connection to loved ones back home.

?The iPhone 5 was released just five days ago, so there are a ton of people looking to upgrade to a new mobile phone,? said Ben Ros, Director of Operations for PetStore.com. ?PetStore.com will include pre-paid Cell Phones for Soldiers envelopes inside the packages we ship to pet owners during the month of October. We hope folks will seize this opportunity to help our soldiers abroad stay in touch with their families, pets included.?

Cell Phones for Soldiers was founded by teenagers Robbie and Brittany Bergquist at the ages of 12 and 13. The charity has since provided more than 168 million minutes of free talk time to servicemen and women stationed around the world. Funds raised from the recycling of cellular phones are used to purchase prepaid international calling cards. On average, Cell Phones for Soldiers distributes 12,000 calling cards each week to bases around the world, care package programs, deployment ceremonies and VA hospitals.

?The Military Benefits Deployment Center lists staying in touch with loved ones as a top-five ?How to Survive Deployment? strategy,? said Ros. ?There are only so many videos you can watch online of soldiers reuniting with their families and pets after tours of duty before you feel compelled to do something for these brave volunteers.?

Some quick facts about the Cell Phones for Soldiers program:

  • In 2011, Cell Phones for Soldiers shared 690,000 communication tools with military families, providing more than 41 million minutes of talk time.?
  • The program collected and recycled 1.5 million phones in 2011.?
  • Since 2004, more than 10.5 million cell phones have been recycled, reducing the impact on landfills.?
  • A $5 donation warrants 2.5 hours of talk time; a $100.00 donation gives 50 hours or 3,000 minutes of talk time?
  • There are approximately 15,000 collection points across the nation, including PetStore.com headquarters in Garden Grove, CA.?
  • In 2012, Cell Phones for Soldiers launched their newest program, Helping Heroes Home. Helping Heroes Home provides emergency funds for returning veterans to alleviate communication challenges as well as physical, emotional and assimilation hardships
?Each year we have been humbled by the amount of people and organizations like PetStore.com that take the initiative to support our troops,? said co-founder Brittany Bergquist. ?We want to continue to mend the communication gap between our armed forces and their loved ones as troops continue to serve our county.?

Donated phones are sent to Michigan-based ReCellular for recycling. For every donated phone valued at $5, Cell Phones for Soldiers is able to provide two and a half hours of free talk time to deployed troops.
Approximately half of the phones ReCellular processes are reconditioned and reused. Phones and components that cannot be refurbished are dismantled and responsibly recycled to reclaim materials, including:

  • Gold, silver and platinum from circuit boards?
  • Copper wiring from phone chargers?
  • Nickel, iron, cadmium and lead from battery packs?
  • Plastic from phone cases and accessories
?The United States Military will always play an important role in peacekeeping missions worldwide,? said co-founder Robbie Bergquist. Therefore connecting our troops with their loved ones is the least that we can do for their daily sacrifices for us.?

Self Improvement | Becoming a Person With a Great Sense of ...

By Sean M. Adams -

We all need humor in your life, and if you do not have a good sense of humor your life will not have as much happiness as possible. And the better your sense of humor the more abundance and prosperity you will have. To have a better sense of humor you need to learn to laugh at yourself, laugh with others, know you don?t have to hurt to be funny and never be too serious.

Learn to laugh at yourself

The first key to enhancing your sense of humor is by being able to laugh at yourself. It is always smart to start by learning to laugh at yourself, and then you can learn to laugh at others. We all do silly and stupid things and it shows a good sense of humor when you can see these silly things you do and laugh at them. Laughing at one?s self is the first and most important step to being a person with a great sense of humor.

Learn to laugh with others

Once you learn to laugh at yourself then you can move on to laughing with other people. The key here is to laugh with them. When people find things they do funny it is OK to laugh with them at the funny things they do. You do not want to laugh at them, only with them.

It doesn?t have to hurt to be funny

The reasons you do not want to laugh at others is because one of the keys for a great sense of humor is to know that you do not have to be mean to understand humor. Too often people think making other people laugh by being mean to someone is the way to go. It is not. You should not hurt others in order to be able to make people laugh. That approach is not the right path to take to having a great sense of humor.

Don?t be so serious

The final step to having a great sense if humor is to not take things too seriously. There are a lot of things out there we need to be serious, but humor and laughter is not one of them. Laugh at everything you can following the above steps. You do not have to see everything from the sense of being serious, instead put on the goofy glasses that let you see things as being funny. It helps.

The Power of Appreciation and Leverage: Boost Your Real Estate ...

real estate appreciation

If you?ve read any of my blogs on BiggerPockets, you?ve probably noticed that I am a believer in real estate appreciation. Yes, real estate can and has lost value in recent years; but over time, real estate generally increases in value. This is especially true if you happen to time the market effectively. I have not been shy about the fact that I believe now is a very good time to buy investment properties. With certain markets at historically low prices and interest rates also at historical lows, it doesn?t take a crystal ball to determine that now is probably a good time to invest in real estate. Just watching the dynamics in my own market and the upward pressure on prices, I have no doubt in my mind that investors have an unbelievable opportunity to buy low and ride a wave of rising values over the coming years.

While most investors today care solely about cash flow, I can?t help but talk about the potential for increasing values. Cash flow is absolutely fundamental to a long term real estate investment, but one of the most powerful principles behind real estate investing is the combination of leverage and appreciation.

Real Estate Leverage & Appreciation Explained

New investors may be asking the question, ?What do you mean by leverage?? Simply put, leverage is a term used in real estate (or any type of investing) to describe the effect of borrowing money to purchase an asset (i.e. property). It?s the idea that you can buy a $100,000 property by investing only $20,000 of your own money. You are essentially ?leveraging? somebody else?s (i.e. the bank?s) capital to buy the property.

When you combine the ability to use leverage in real estate with appreciation, you have an unbelievable money making combination. Let me illustrate with the example below (For the sake of this example, I?m going to leave out any cash flow calculation):

Let?s say you are able to buy an investment property for $100,000. Over the course of 5 years, the property increases at a rate of about 6% per year so that in year 5, the value of the property is worth approximately $134,000. Most people would nod their head and say 6% per year on an investment is fairly respectable.

However, if you are able to buy this property with leverage, your true return actually looks a lot better than 6% annually. Let?s say in this example you put 20% down or $20,000 to buy the property. Your $20,000 investment actually made an additional $34,000 (134K-100K) over the course of just 5 years. That?s approximately a 22% annual return for each of those 5 years! Why? Because while you only had $20,000 invested, you had the benefit of the entire asset increasing in value, not just the dollars you had invested.

(And again, this example doesn?t even include the returns generated by renting the property!)

It?s been reported that over 90% of millionaires made their money in real estate ? this is why! I know this is a simple concept, but it?s one of the reasons that real estate investing is so powerful. Living in the United States, we have unbelievable access to financing as well as an abundance of properties. All of the tools to build this kind of wealth are at our fingertips if we just take a little initiative.

OFFICIAL-TEXT-S&P summary: PT Lippo Karawaci Tbk.

===============================================================================

Rationale

The rating on Indonesia-based property developer PT Lippo Karawaci Tbk. (Lippo

Karawaci) reflects the company's aggressive capital expenditure plans and

exposure to volatile cash flows from the cyclical property development

business. The company's dominant position in the domestic property market and

its strong financial flexibility in terms of good access to equity and capital

markets temper the above weaknesses. The rating also reflects our assessment

that Lippo Karawaci has a "fair" business risk profile and an "aggressive"

financial risk profile, as our criteria define the terms.

We view Lippo Karawaci's aggressive expansion appetite as a rating weakness.

Higher capital expenditure could result in more borrowings than what we

assumed in our base-case scenario. The company's good financial flexibility

tempers this weakness. Lippo Karawaci has the flexibility to sell assets to

fund expansion.

We expect Lippo Karawaci's strong operating performance to continue in the

next 12 to 24 months. Demand for the company's properties and healthcare

services has been robust and occupancy at its hotels and shopping malls has

increased due to strong economic growth in Indonesia. Although borrowings have

increased by US$150 million as of June 30, 2012, from about US$650 million a

year earlier, the company's profitability has also improved in the first half

of 2012 compared with a year earlier. Both factors have contributed to a ratio

of lease-adjusted debt to EBITDA of about 4.2x, which is consistent with the

rating. This ratio has improved from an average of 4.7x in 2009-2011.

Lippo Karawaci's healthcare services generate more stable cash flows than

property development, albeit at lower margins. We expect the prospects for

healthcare to be positive due to the shortage of good-quality healthcare

services and the rising affluence in Indonesia.

Lippo Karawaci's recurring income from leasing properties, property

management, and dividends from its investment in First REIT and Lippo Malls Indonesia Retail

Trust (not rated) also provide stability to its cash

flows. We expect dividends from REITs to contribute about 12% of the company's

consolidated EBITDA in the next one to two years.

We believe the good market position, long record, and satisfactory

profitability of Lippo Karawaci's property development and healthcare

businesses underpins the rating. EBITDA margins on property development are

25%-27%, while those for the non-property development businesses are 20%-23%.

In our base-case scenario, we expect Lippo Karawaci's consolidated revenue to

increase to about Indonesian rupiah (IDR) 5.0 trillion-IDR5.5 trillion in 2012

from about IDR4.1 trillion in 2011. We anticipate EBITDA to go up to IDR1.2

trillion from IDR1 trillion. With the completion of more hospitals in the next

one to two years, we expect EBITDA from the healthcare segment to grow by

about 30% to IDR140 billion in 2012 compared with 2010. We expect the ratio of

lease-adjusted debt to EBITDA to improve to less than 4.2x and the ratio of

debt to capitalization to remain less than 45% by the end of 2012. For the 12

months ended June 30, 2012, the lease-adjusted debt-to-EBITDA ratio was 4.2x

and the debt-to-capitalization ratio was 37.8%.

Liquidity

Lippo Karawaci's liquidity is "adequate," as defined under our criteria. The

company has a long maturity profile with the bulk of its borrowings comprising

senior unsecured notes due in 2015. Near-term refinancing needs are limited.

In addition, in May 2012, the company raised US$150 million in notes due 2019.

Capital expenditure is the main use of liquidity and the company has some

flexibility to adjust this spending. In our base-case scenario, we expect the

company's sources of liquidity to exceed its uses by at least 1.2x over the

next 12 months. Our liquidity assumptions are based on the following factors

and assumptions:

-- Funds from operations will be IDR700 billion-IDR800 billion in 2012.

-- Cash and cash equivalent are IDR6.1 trillion as of June 30, 2012.

-- Committed capital expenditure and working capital needs for the next

12 months are about IDR2 trillion.

Lippo Karawaci has good headroom in its financial covenants. As of June 30,

2012, the company complied with the covenants in its bank loan agreements of a

minimum interest cover of 1x and debt-to-equity ratio of less than 2.7x. We

expect Lippo Karawaci to maintain a comfortable cushion in the covenants in

the next 12 to 18 months using our base-case assumptions. In the unlikely

event that EBITDA declines by 20%, we expect the company will continue to

comply with the covenants.

Outlook

The stable outlook reflects our expectation that Lippo Karawaci's strong

growth from its property development and healthcare businesses, stable

profitability, and good financial flexibility will translate to a financial

performance over the next 12 months that is appropriate for a 'BB-' rating.

We could lower the rating if Lippo Karawaci's expansion is more aggressive

than we expected and is debt funded. We could also downgrade the company if

its revenues and profitability deteriorate. This could occur if a significant

slowdown in Indonesia's economy or a sharp increase in interest rates reduces

the demand for properties and healthcare services. We consider a

lease-adjusted debt-to-EBITDA ratio of more than 4.5x to be a downgrade

trigger.

Potential upside to the rating is limited. However, we could upgrade Lippo

Karawaci if: (1) the company expands its business scale and diversity; and (2)

it improves the income contributions from stable and less cyclical businesses

such as healthcare, property leasing, and property management.

Kindle Fire HD review: Improved, but not evolved

9 hrs.

When you handle the new 7-inch Kindle Fire HD, you feel as if Amazon's engineers went through a checklist and nuked all of the complaints of the original Fire in an orderly fashion. Battery life not great? It's 11 hours now. Power button too easy to bump by accident? Fixed. No physical volume button? Now there is. Screen not so easy on the eyes? Noticeably improved.

But if many of the hardware complaints are resolved, why does it feel so much like last year's Kindle Fire? Why doesn't it feel like a step up? Because the experience itself has not evolved, and it's hard to look past its chief role as a portal for Amazon to sell you books, movies, apps and games.?

In other words, once you've spent $199, it's time to start spending money.

Physically, the HD is a hair thinner than its predecessor?but strangely larger ? wider all around, making it prettier, but?harder to grip with one hand. There are no physical buttons on the face, but now there are, flush with one edge, a power button and a volume toggle. These buttons are so subtle, they are sometimes hard to locate, but at least it's better than the first Kindle Fire, which turned on and off by accident all the time on account of its pronounced power button, located on the bottom center of the device.

I get why Amazon stashed the buttons: The company's vision has always been to remove any barrier between you and the book or movie or app. That means that, ideally, all you see is a screen.?And that?screen is definitely where Amazon put its money this time around.

The reading experience on the new Kindle Fire HD is far better than on the original. The pixels are tighter, making for a near-"Retina" display, where you can't see the dots. If you, like me, read on a tablet at night (ideally with white text on a black background), you will appreciate the HD's ability to turn the dimmer way down low, so that your eyes feel less strain in the dark. And the screen's contrast is higher while glare is reduced. You're not going to love it in the bright light of a summer day, but in most situations, words are easier to enjoy.

Pictures, too. The original Fire didn't have a photo viewer at all, and the one created for the Fire HD is a delight to use. A single finger tap brings up a photo, you can double-tap or pinch to zoom, then a quick two-fingered tap sends it back. It's good user interface, and it serves to highlight the fact that photos look good on the HD screen.

They look good once they've loaded, that is.?Unless you download photos to your device, the app browses your cloud-stored shots, pulling from Amazon's Cloud Drive and Facebook. You can't even shoot photos with the built-in camera?? that's just for video chatting on Skype, at least until third-party apps,?such as a forthcoming Facebook snapshot program, will make use of it.

You'd think with "HD" in its name, the new Fire would be a huge step-up for movie enjoyment, but the original Fire already?did okay in that department. The jump up in screen resolution is more noticeable with stills and text than moving video, especially on that small a screen.

That isn't to say watching movies isn't more fun on the Fire HD ? a new feature called X-Ray (powered by my favorite trivia source, the Amazon-owned IMDB), lets you pull up movie information and photos as you're watching.?

Amazon has also partnered with Dolby to up the quality of the stereo speakers and make them louder. The first ? also a stereo pair ? weren't that bad, though,?and there's still a tinny experience compared to a decent set of earphones. (And wouldn't you likely want to use earphones as often as possible anyway?)

Email is another app that Amazon's software developers have clearly been putting effort into, beyond the photo app and the X-Ray movie trivia. The old email program?was dark and stiff, the new one is brighter, more agile to the touch and intuitive. Also, it supports more complicated email accounts, such as those that sync to corporate Exchange servers.

Looking at all of the Fire HD's software, though, I don't get a sense of the design language, like I do on Microsoft's Windows 8 and Windows Phone products. Nor can I tell exactly how ambitious Amazon is about breeding first-party software, like Apple does. Yes, there's email and calendar, but when I went to jot down some notes, I couldn't find a way to do it. Even the included (but third-party) OfficeSuite app proved no use, despite its name.

Maybe a 7-inch tablet isn't really for doing stuff, it's just for consuming media. An honest notion.?But what happens when the 8.9-inch Kindle Fire HD comes out? More physically resembling an iPad, it will have a harder time justifying its lack of activity.

You can't take a picture, you can't write notes. You can email pictures but you can't edit them with the native photo app. Maybe Amazon's goal is to send you out to the Appstore to fill in these gaps for yourself (and pay for the right to do so). But that's not how it tends to work: Google and Apple foster app innovation in part by building their own apps, and continuing to raise the bar.?

Like with?the previous Kindle Fire, another big issue is that most of the media applications require connectivity. Yes, books live in local storage while you're reading them, and you can download music or photos for use later, but much of that is premeditated. Purchase a video, and you have the right to download it, but if you are merely Amazon's loyalest customer, and a $70-per-year?paying member of the?Amazon?Prime service, you have to establish a Wi-Fi connection to enjoy the bounty of amazing TV shows ("Downton Abbey"! "The West Wing"!?"The French Chef with Julia Child"!) and movies ("Thor"! "True Grit"!?"Hot Rod"!).

So let's get back to the original premise, that while the Kindle Fire has certainly received a tune-up, it's geared more than ever to serve as a means to part you from your money. Wake up the device, and the first thing you see is an ad, for a movie or some Amazon special offer. Slide the wrong slider, and you accidentally "learn more" about said product, instead of getting to your own?stuff. Once you're on the home screen, you'll notice a one-line text ad at the bottom of the screen.?

Even Amazon recognizes that this could come off as a bit crass to some customers, and is offering a $15 reprieve. (You'll find the option under "Manage Your Kindle," once you've registered a Fire HD.)

But there's another new promotional vehicle that will not go away, even after you've paid the $15 bounty. In the home screen, when you turn the device from horizontal view to vertical view, you instantly see what "Customers Also Bought." It's a list of Amazon-sold media that changes depending on what you are looking at in the main carousel. This "feature" replaced the Favorites bookshelf, which had been filled with your content. Favorites is now easily accessible from any screen, by tapping a star icon at the bottom right corner, but it's clear Amazon didn't mind sneaking a little bonus advertising onto the home screen as part of the redesign.

Look, fundamentally, this is also the premise of the iPad. From iTunes to the App Store, from iBooks to the Newsstand, Apple wants to sell and sell, and claim a healthy cut from those who want to reach you as a customer. It's just that the out-of-box experience for the iPad is less up front about it. There's more to explore, more to play with. People who don't have iTunes accounts ? including my mom and my sister, in fact ? still manage to enjoy their iPhones and iPads to a great extent.

The Kindle Fire HD just goes a little too far. This is perilous, especially at a time when consumer options are so plentiful.

If you, like me, enjoy Amazon's e-books, then you probably already know that you can download apps to get at them on iPhones, iPads, Android devices and even Windows Phones. That's why I prefer Amazon over Apple when it comes to books: Amazon's are just available in more places.?

Amazon is bringing video to more platforms too ? most notably with the recent introduction of an iPad app for streaming video, which gives you access to stuff you bought and also Prime subscription?video that you can stream at no extra cost.

So why choose a Kindle Fire HD over an iPad? Price. It's $199.?

But what if ? and I'm just spitballing here ? what if Apple puts out an 8-inch iPad for $249? Then you'd get basically the same content ? and a whole lot more ? on a slightly larger screen, for $50 more. (And you'd be able to try it out in an Apple store before you bought it.)?

If the rumors are true and Apple really does come out with a mini iPad in October, that $199 price point that we went absolutely bonkers over a year ago will look, well, a tad high.

You could buy an original but slightly tweaked Kindle Fire for $159, but what I think you really should do is buy a Kindle Paperwhite e-reader for $119. That thing is a fine example of innovation in the face of commoditization ? a product that stands out from the herd of lookalikes without costing any?more. My Paperwhite review will hit closer to its Oct. 1 launch, but I can tell you right now, from what I've seen already, it's?fine to pre-order it.

But if you have any money left over, do yourself a favor and keep saving up for an iPad. The 7-inch?Kindle Fire HD is nice, but it's just one of the paths to a rich Amazon customer experience, and it's?not the best one.

With New iOS 6 App Store, The Most Important Changes Are Under The Hood

ios6-app-store-gamesOne of the most noticeable consumer-facing changes in the new version of Apple's mobile operating system, iOS 6, is the updated App Store application for iPhone, iPod Touch and iPad. Apple chose not to focus on the changes during this morning's announcement - perhaps because details were already revealed?thanks to developer leaks showing the new user interface?in action. But the App Store has received a major overhaul worth mentioning. It?now prominently showcases the "Genius" app recommendation section, and more controversially, now uses a card-like mechanism for browsing through the applications themselves. However, while users will be focused on the new look and feel of the App Store app when iOS 6 rolls out later this month, some of the most critical changes affecting developers have been taking place behind the scenes. Early data shows that the integration of the technology from Apple acquisition Chomp hasn't just affected the front-end - algorithm tweaks which impact app rankings are also a part of the new package.

Jerry Lawler: Aware, Alert, Improving

The King lives!

Just a couple days after suffering a heart attack while broadcasting Monday Night Raw, WWE veteran Jerry Lawler is progressing very well.

"[Jerry] is hooked up to tubes and is still not able to speak," son Kevin Lawler tells TMZ. "But he's writing stuff on a notepad to talk to people... Not just brief notes, but detailed stories which show he knows where he is and what is going on."

Jerry Lawler Pic

That's very good to hear, especially as Kevin confirms the family was concerned Jerry had suffered brain damage to the amount of time he was unconscious and not breathing backstage.

The 62-year old remains in the hospital and it's unclear when he will be let out. We send him our very best and hope he finally retires from the ring after this scare.

Post-convention glow dimmed by grim jobs data

PORTSMOUTH, N.H./ORANGE CITY, Iowa (Reuters) - President Barack Obama charged back onto the campaign trail on Friday and faced a withering attack from Republican rival Mitt Romney over disappointing new U.S. jobs numbers that dimmed the afterglow from Obama's Democratic convention.

Just hours after basking in his supporters' adulation in Charlotte, North Carolina, Obama was hit by a stark reminder of the challenge he faces convincing voters to give him a second term despite stubbornly high unemployment on his watch.

As the candidates launched the final two-month drive to Election Day, the latest Reuters/Ipsos poll showed Obama getting at least a small bounce from his convention, taking a narrow lead of 46 percent to Romney's 44 percent among likely voters. Romney had led 45 percent to Obama's 44 percent.

But the polling was conducted before the Labor Department reported on Friday that U.S. employers added a lower-than-expected 96,000 jobs in August - which could ensure that any "bump" in popular support for Obama is limited and brief.

The grim economic news followed Obama's impassioned speech on Thursday night in which he accepted his party's nomination and appealed to Americans for more time and patience to finish his economic agenda.

Pouncing on the jobs data to slam Obama's handling of the economy - the top concern of voters - Romney called the figures "disheartening" and "simply unimaginable" as he campaigned in Iowa.

"There's almost nothing the president's done in the last three and a half, four years, that gives the American people confidence he knows what he's doing when it comes to jobs and the economy," Romney said.

While noting that the private sector has now generated jobs for 30 straight months, Obama - returning to the campaign trail in New Hampshire - acknowledged that: "It's not good enough. We need to create more jobs faster."

At the same time, he pointed out that Republicans in Congress had blocked much of his jobs plan and accused Romney of making promises to revitalize the economy but not telling voters how he would do it.

"If the Republicans are serious about being concerned about joblessness we could create one million new jobs right now, if Congress would pass the jobs plan I sent them a year ago," Obama told a rally in Portsmouth, New Hampshire.

Obama's nationally televised acceptance speech capped two weeks of back-to-back nominating conventions for Obama and Romney.

The address opened the last phase of a White House battle that polls show is essentially deadlocked amid deep voter anxiety about the economy, which Obama argued he had put on the road to recovery even though growth remained lackluster.

Obama offered a steady-as-you-go message that outlined priorities like creating 1 million new manufacturing jobs but provided few details on how to achieve them. He thrilled the crowd when he ended with a preacher-like crescendo.

Pundits' reviews were not as glowing as they were for an address to the convention by former President Bill Clinton on Wednesday.

BACK TO CAMPAIGN TRAIL

The latest jobs data could give a boost to Romney, the former head of a private equity firm who has made his business experience the centerpiece of his campaign.

He argues he is uniquely qualified to create job growth and says Obama is not up to the job. But the Obama campaign has sought to undermine Romney's argument by pointing out some firms he invested in ended up cutting jobs or shipping them overseas.

Obama, who entered office during the darkest days of the 2007-2009 recession, has brought unemployment down from a peak of 10 percent in his first year but has been unable to crack the 8 percent barrier - a fact that Romney's camp has stressed.

"This is not even close to what a recovery looks like," Paul Ryan, Romney's vice presidential running mate, told CNBC.

Obama campaign spokeswoman Jen Psaki said the Romney-Ryan approach was not the answer, saying that would mean "going back to the same policies that led us to the crisis that we've been going through to begin with."

But the unemployment data still raises doubts whether Obama will get anything more than a limited -- and short-lived boost -- from the convention.

Obama senior adviser David Plouffe sought to play down expectations, saying he did not expect any major shift in voter sentiment. "We come out of the convention with momentum. That doesn't mean the race is going to change significantly," he told reporters traveling with Obama.

SWING STATE TOUR

Obama and Vice President Joe Biden on Friday were in the toss-up states of New Hampshire and Iowa for joint campaign events. Romney's schedule was also taking him to those two states, which could be critical to piecing together the 270 electoral votes needed to win the White House.

They are among eight to 10 battleground states that are likely to decide the election, a list that also includes Florida, Virginia, North Carolina, Ohio, Colorado, Nevada and Wisconsin.

Those states have been flooded by tens of millions of dollars in TV ads by the campaigns, and hundreds of millions more from outside groups allied with the two candidates.

Obama used his convention speech to acknowledge the economy was not fully healed while making the case that it was on the right track and he needed another term to finish the task.

Obama also dismissed Romney and Ryan as foreign policy neophytes and mocked the Republican nominee for offending British leaders by criticizing London's handling of the Olympic Games while on an overseas trip there.

Seeking to turn the tables on Obama, Romney said on Friday he had only been speaking to the British in a straight-forward way but faulted the president for what he said was a failure to talk tough enough with China about trade and currency practices.

"The message from last night was that the president's plan is four more years of the four last years. And I don't think the American people want four more years of the four last years," Romney said.

The Obama speech in many ways failed to capture the energy and excitement of his 2008 nomination in Denver. But Democrats said they were pleased with the three-day convention, which they say could help reignite supporters' enthusiasm.

With the conventions done - Republicans met last week in Tampa, Florida - the next big event on the political calendar is the first of three presidential debates on October 3 in Denver.

Rein in meeting disruptions ? Business Management Daily: Free ...

Few things annoy office workers more than unnecessary and un??pro??ductive meetings, surveys find. People wander off topic, send texts instead of listening, and behave in all sorts of dysfunctional ways.

Keep your team meetings on task by adopting a few techniques. The first step is to make sure everyone is clear on the agenda and redirect people back to that agenda when they ramble or interrupt, say executives and meeting planners.

You may need to get creative in how you do that. Dana Brownlee, founder of Professionalism Matters, a corporate-training company in Atlanta, found that an Elmo doll provided an effective solution to curbing ramblers. She puts the doll in the center of the meeting table and tells participants, ?Anytime anybody in the session thinks we?re getting off track, pick up the Elmo doll.? This allows co-workers to express frustration without interrupting, she says.

Another common derailer of meetings: interrupters. Brenna Smith, founder and CEO of SheNow.org, a website for women, found an effective way to rein them in when she was making a slide presentation to her new boss and 10 colleagues several years ago. Mid-sentence, a co-worker stood up and walked toward the front of the room, arguing that her ideas wouldn?t work.

She successfully deflected the attack by saying, ?I think you?re making a really good point, but I want to finish what I?m saying first so we can talk about my ideas, and then we can talk about yours if we have time.?

He retreated to his seat, she finished her presentation and her proposal was adopted.

Hans Werner Henze: Wagner should not be played in Israel

The doyen of German composers, a political outcast for much of his life, Hans Werner Henze, 86, has spoken out on the ever-inflammatory topic of Richard Wagner?s antisemitism and his influence on the Third Reich.

?So long as there are people living in Israel who endured the Nazi concentration camps,? ?he said, ?Wagner should not be performed there. I see no pressing reason to play Hitler?s favourite music.?

Speaking ahead of the Dresden production of his anti-capitalist, anti-war opera We Come to the River, Henze added: ?I have always tried to remove myself as far as possible from (Wagner?s) actions, his ideology and his work.?

That?s telling them.

Astronauts try, try again to fix space station

After an unsuccessful attempt last week to install a new power unit to the exterior of the International Space Station, two astronauts are trying again during a spacewalk on Wednesday.

NASA astronaut Sunita Williams and Japanese spaceflier Akihiko Hoshide will battle the stuck bolts that prevented them from properly installing the power box on the space station's backbone-like truss during their first spacewalk. The outing, which is due to begin around 7:15 a.m. ET, will mark the second time the duo has worked outside the orbiting complex in six days.

Williams and Hoshide spent more than eight hours upgrading the exterior of the station last Thursday, but a stubborn bolt on the so-called main bus switching unit (MBSU) prevented them from securing the power box to the outpost and attaching its electrical connections.

The International Space Station has four MBSUs that harness power from the outpost's solar arrays and distribute it throughout the orbiting complex. Without the use of one unit, the station is unable to relay power from two of the eight solar arrays on the massive orbiting complex.

In an unrelated mishap, a component that ensures power is distributed at the proper amperage and voltage suffered a glitch late Saturday, NASA officials said. As a result, the station is only able to use five of its eight available power channels. [Photos: Spacewalking Astronauts Fix Up Space Station]

With three power channels unavailable, flight controllers re-allocated available resources aboard the outpost for critical systems and to keep the crew safe. Despite the outages, space station operations have only suffered a minimal impact, and the crew will not be affected as they prepare for Wednesday's spacewalk, agency officials said.

Mission managers opted to proceed with the extra spacewalk after working around the clock since Thursday to analyze the problem.

"The most probable cause is likely a combination of a slight misalignment in the positioning of the spare unit for its installation prior to bolting and possible damage to the threads of the receptacle posts on the S-zero truss to which the MBSU must be bolted in place," NASA officials said in an update.

Last week, Williams and Hoshide removed a faulty MBSU and tried to install the spare, but they were unable to drive in one of the bolts that fastens the unit to the space station's truss. After repeated attempts failed, the astronauts used a tether to temporarily tie the MBSU down, and were forced to wrap up the marathon spacewalk.

The outing lasted 8 hours and 17 minutes, making it the third longest spacewalk in history and the longest ever performed by a space station crew.

Williams and Hoshide spent the weekend reviewing the choreography for the upcoming spacewalk, and preparing tools that will be used to clean and lubricate the MBSU bolts and their corresponding receptacles on the space station's truss.

If the power unit cannot be properly installed, mission managers may opt to have the astronauts bring the box inside for more analysis, NASA officials said.

ESSAY: 4 years on, Obama message challenge differs

CHARLOTTE, N.C. (AP) ? We campaign in poetry, Mario Cuomo used to say, but we govern in prose.

This was how the then-New York governor explained the gap between his soaring speeches and the more prosaic product of his government, when the springtime of campaign hopes succumbed to the winter of governing discontent.

That was a generation ago. But it is a pithy summary of Barack Obama's challenge as he goes before his convention this week.

There are a lot of very angry people in the country, out of work or living on less. But anger is not the dominant political sentiment among the voters likely to swing this presidential election.

It is, instead, disappointment.

"There's absolutely a sense of disappointment among a large subset of Democrats," said David Segal, a former Rhode Island state legislator who now runs an organization that lobbies for Internet freedom and civil liberties.

The Romney-Ryan team astutely recognized the discontent and tried to package the sentiment at the Republican convention last week. The purpose was to peel away voters who were proud of their vote for Obama four years ago and are disappointed now by the state of the country he has been leading ever since.

"The president hasn't disappointed you because he wanted to," Romney said in his acceptance speech. "The president has disappointed America because he hasn't led America in the right direction."

___

AS THE CHALLENGER, Romney has the easier task. He gets to campaign in poetry. But Obama must now explain the governing prose of the last four years.

That is a very hard job, even for a campaigner as capable as Obama. The country on its face is not in great shape. The last president to win re-election with unemployment over 8 percent was Franklin D. Roosevelt. (It was 16.6 percent when FDR was re-elected in 1936, down from 24.9 percent when he was first elected in 1932.)

A key part of Obama's central argument is that, without him, these last four years would have been worse. There is considerable evidence this is true. A study by the congressional budget office says unemployment could have soared near 12 percent (instead of the peak of 10 percent) without the economic stimulus and other rescue measures Obama succeeded in passing.

But it's a hard sell to compare what a report says and what palpably is. Modern American sound-bite politics resist subtle what-ifs or might-have-beens. The template of modern presidential campaigning was a simple yes or no question from the master, Ronald Reagan. Romney wants voters to answer Reagan's simple question: Are you better off now than you were four years ago? Obama wants to change the question: Are you better off now than you would have been without me?

"It takes many more months for an incumbent to develop a credible defense of a half-full glass than it takes a challenger to remind people that the president promised to fill the half-empty glass all the way," said Samuel Popkin, a political scientist who has given message advice to several Democratic presidents and candidates.

David Plouffe, one of Obama's key strategists, went on TV Sunday to explain that Obama should be re-elected because he would do more than just finish the job of pulling America out of the recession. "We're going to explain to the American people and the middle class of this country how we're going to continue to recover, but do more than just recover from the recession, to build an economy from the middle out."

Plouffe no doubt knew what he meant by the phrase "from the middle out." Presumably, it has something to do with the difference between "trickle-down" economics and middle-class economics. But whatever it means, it is a more difficult message to get across than 2008's "Yes, we can."

Politics is always about comparisons and expectations. Few events in American political history sent expectations soaring higher than the new fact of Obama's election. But those raised expectations collided with the reality of a sour economy. Turning the welter of governing prose back into campaign poetry now is tricky.

On Monday, Joe Biden took a shot, amplifying a line that's been kicking around for days. "You want to know whether we're better off? I got a little bumper sticker for you," he said. "Osama bin Laden is dead and General Motors is alive." The Romney campaign jumped all over him for suggesting people were better off at a time when unemployment is still high and gas prices have doubled.

___

BIDEN'S QUIP AND the reaction to it point back to a central question: How well does Obama actually grasp his own plight?

There was clearly a period when he did not, when Democrats worried he would be a one-term president because he was not getting the problem. At one point, he said the problem was that he had not communicated well enough. "Every politician who gets in trouble thinks it's how they are saying things instead of what they're saying," Paul Begala, an adviser to Bill Clinton, said after they left office in 2001.

But Obama seems more focused now on doing what is needed to keep his job. He has reconciled with Bill Clinton, no small task, and at times now seems to be running on Clinton's economic record rather than his own, which makes political sense ? if the public will buy it.

Yet even now, there are moments when it isn't clear if Obama's campaign fully grasps the challenge.

Aboard Air Force One on Saturday, Jen Psaki, the campaign spokeswoman, said Romney had more at stake in his convention than Obama does at his because "the American people know a lot more about the president than they know about Mitt Romney."

Actually, it is precisely because the country knows so much about Obama that he has the higher hill to climb. That's the downside of being the incumbent. It will take more than Joe Biden's bumper sticker for Obama to assuage two very different groups of disappointed voters ? liberals who wish Obama had done more and swing voters who wish what he had done had worked more.

___

AFTER TRYING TO position himself as a conciliator and a mediator, Obama in recent months has been more confrontational with Congress and moved unilaterally on key issues designed to appeal to the base of the Democratic party ? endorsing gay marriage, for example, and suspending deportation of young immigrants brought here illegally by their parents as children.

Those steps may help mitigate disappointment by re-energizing disillusioned liberal segments of the Democratic party. Romney's selection of Paul Ryan as his running mate is helping, too, and in the end liberal voters don't have many other places to go (although staying home would be a problem for Obama).

The middle is a different story. Much of the Republican convention was an embedded appeal to swing voters that it was okay to have voted for Obama and now reconsider. In effect: They were seduced, and now it's reality time.

"Let's put the poetry aside," said Artur Davis, a 2008 Obama supporter who switched to the Republican Party and spoke this year at its convention. And that comment illustrates precisely why an incumbent's road is harder. The very elegance of Obama's 2008 campaign has become one of his major liabilities in 2012.

That means a recalibration, and this week is the moment to see if he can be a different kind of candidate. The test now is this: Four years on from the poetry that delivered Barack Obama to the White House, can he find a voice that makes the cadence of governing prose compelling enough to keep his job?
