LAFAYETTE -- With its top pitchers graduated from last season's state title squad, the Broomfield baseball team's philosophy is a simple one this spring.
"Be aggressive and go after it," third baseman Kyle Holbrook said of the Eagles' offensive approach. "... We just go out and have fun."
Holbrook lived the philosophy on Thursday afternoon against Northern League rival Centaurus. He crushed the first pitch of the ballgame over the center-field fence, and doubled and scored late to help lead Broomfield to an 11-5 victory.
In a battle between the two teams who entered the day No. 1 and 2 in the Northern League standings, Broomfield (5-3, 4-0) solidified its spot at the top by breaking open a game that was tied 5-5 through four innings.
Eight of nine spots in the lineup produced hits, and seven of nine spots produced runs for the Eagles, who entered the game averaging 11.6 runs per outing. And the solid outing came against Centaurus ace Colton Royer, who already has thrown a no-hitter this spring but was tagged for seven runs, five earned, in five innings Thursday.
"Our goal is to put the ball in play," Broomfield coach Garren Estes said. "They had a couple of bobble plays, and we just tried to take advantage and keep putting pressure on them."
And that pressure got to Centaurus at times. The Warriors (4-2, 2-2) committed eight errors in the field, some on similar plays that left their coach frustrated not in the mistakes themselves, but that they were repeated.
"Once we learn from our mistakes, I think we'll be pretty good," second-year CHS coach Aaron Allen said.
The Centaurus nine appeared to have stolen the momentum in the fourth inning, rallying with three runs to tie the game at 5-5. Brody Jaskul and David Neitenbach each singled and scored to lead the charge. Neitenbach enjoyed a stellar day at the plate, going 3 for 3 with a double, triple, two runs and two runs batted in.
But Broomfield answered with a pair of runs in the fifth inning. Angelo Perez added a home run in the sixth. And the Eagles tacked on three more runs in the seventh.
As potent as the Eagles' bats were, a team that has allowed nine runs per game this season also got a strong pitching outing from Todd Sena.
Sena threw a complete game, allowing eight hits and one walk while striking out eight.
"He had to prove he wanted to stay in and he did," Estes said. "He finished real strong, and we're happy with that."
The two teams play again at noon Saturday at Broomfield.
"We came out and thought we were going to win it," said Jaskul, who had two hits and two runs. "They were hitting the ball better than we were. It slipped away from us. We've got another one Saturday. That's what we've got to look forward to."
