Sustainable Real Estate Conference Kicks off in Dubai | Dubai Land ...

The two day event will see debates and discussions between senior Emirati, Arab and foreign officials, executives and dozens of international events aimed at promoting sustainability in the real estate sector in both the short and long-term.

The conference is the first of its kind to embody the national green economy initiative launched by His Highness Sheikh Mohammed bin Rashid Al Maktoum, UAE Vice President, Prime Minister and Ruler of Dubai titled "Green Economy for Sustainable Development".

It is sponsored by Diamond Developers and Falconcity of Wonders is the strategic partner. The event represents one of the main activities during the third edition of the Annual Investment Meeting (AIM), commenced yesterday.

Sultan Butti bin Mejren, Director General of the Land Department, said, "The conference addresses the three dimensions of sustainability (ecological, social and economic). It also highlights how activities related to the property sector can match sustainability requirements. Other issues related to finance, regulation, marketing and investment in the sector will also be up for discussion."

Bin Mejren noted, "The Land Department has taken it upon itself to address issues related to sustainability in the real estate sector and to come forward with leading initiatives as the Department considers sustainability as one of its top priorities. The LD keeps pace with global developments and trends and, in accordance with the long term strategy and vision of His Highness Sheikh Mohammed bin Rashid Al Maktoum, draws a roadmap to launch initiatives to achieve sustainability in the real estate sector. The conference also offers a review of previous practices to achieve real estate sustainability and discuss current progress in order to develop modern standards."

The Director General of the Land Department hailed the Arab League's efforts and its constructive cooperation with the LD to achieve the objectives of the conference. "Organising the first edition of this conference in Dubai is based on AL's belief in the emirate and its ability to meet the requirements of real estate sustainability and its role in promoting such concepts in Arab real estate markets," said bin Mejren.

Prof. Refat Al Faouri, Director General of the Arab Administrative Development Organisation (ARADO), working under the umbrella of the Arab League, said, "The Land Department is the first official entity in the Arab world to address the challenges of real estate sustainability in a professional manner."

"The property sector in the Arab world lacks sustainability practices, which are common practices in international markets. Hosting this conference in Dubai reflects its position as a hub for promoting sustainability concepts and will help in educating professionals working in this sector about the importance of sustainability," he added.

The conference will discuss sustainability theoretically and practically by showcasing leading practices of real estate sustainability in the UAE and in Dubai in particular. Details of Dubai Sustainable City, the first city of its kind in the region will be revealed during the conference. He said that the new city is expected to be a success and will position Dubai as an active player in real estate sustainability.

On her part, Majida Ali Rashid, Chairwoman of the LD's Real Estate Investment Management and Promotion Centre, said, "The wise leadership of the UAE is keen on enhancing the state's competitiveness internationally and on building an environment capable of attracting investment opportunities. The efforts are directed towards promoting growth and creating more jobs to meet with developmental needs while international economies are facing successive crisis due to changes in their political, economic and social landscape."

She stressed, "The sessions at the conference will explore the best ways to achieve global leadership in real estate sustainability. The UAE's green economy initiative announced by His Highness Sheikh Mohammed bin Rashid Al Maktoum is aimed at transforming the UAE into a world leader and a centre for the export and re-export of green products and technologies, and to maintain a sustainable environment to support long-term economic growth."

The long-term national initiative includes various programmes and policies in the areas of energy, agriculture, investment and sustainable transport, in addition to new environmental and construction policies that aim to raise the quality of life in the UAE.

A group of experts and specialists from the UAE, Arab World and abroad will take part in the event. "This is a unique opportunity to educate those in the region and businessmen working in property development regarding the transition towards sustainable real estate to ensure the safety of the community, protection of the environment and the improvement and development of professional and economic practices through rationalisation and the wise use of natural resources," Majida added. "As a result of a transforming international economic landscape, the conference is a platform for investors looking for reliable opportunities," she concluded.

The Chairwoman of the Real Estate Investment Management and Promotion Centre noted that sustainability requires building strategic and solid relationships between parties involved in the real estate sector to create investments, review best international practices, to benefit from experiences and to study regional and international variables. Debates at the conference will review the impact of these variables on real estate markets and other risks related to investment in this field.

According to her, the sector shall focus on securing alternative financing channels, enhancing the knowledge of investors while meeting their expectations and conveying their concerns to decision makers.
